The Challenge for Cyrus Tours
Cyrus Tours, specializing in tourist trains and buses, decided to upgrade one of its trains to address the noise and exhaust emissions from its diesel engine—issues that were unwelcome in the spa regions of Usedom and Wolin near Świnoujście. The project aimed to convert the vehicle into a quiet, eco-friendly electric mode of transport with a daily range of 100 km, capable of towing two carriages.
Scope of the conversion project
As part of the project, Ennovation Technology implemented numerous improvements to achieve zero emissions for the vehicle. The diesel engine, transmission, fuel, and exhaust systems were all removed, and the new drive system included:
- An electric motor with 115 kW of power and a peak torque of 300 Nm, providing dynamic and environmentally-friendly performance.
- A 44 kWh battery system, supported by two DC/DC converters: one powering the 24V batteries and the other, at lower voltage, supplying auxiliary devices.
- An inverter that controls power flow and ensures smooth drive control.
Installing these new components also required additional structural modifications, such as shortening the drive shaft and designing and mounting new brackets for the battery and electric motor.
Safety Systems: Advanced protective measures were implemented, including an insulation monitoring device (galvanic insulation) and a safety switch that quickly cuts off high voltage if needed, along with an AVAS system.
Charging Management: The train was equipped with a 6.6 kW onboard charger, enabling full recharging within 7–9 hours, making it convenient to charge overnight. A Type 2 charging port was also installed, compatible with market standards.
Additionally, a new dashboard, gear selector, and digital display were installed.
Technical Specifications of the Electric Tourist Train
- Peak Power: 115 kW
- Peak Torque: 300 Nm
- Range: At least 100 km
- Battery Capacity: 40 kWh, LFP
Results and Future Plans
Through collaboration between Cyrus Tours and Ennovation Technology, the upgraded train has become a quiet, eco-friendly means of transport that meets the high demands of the spa region and the needs of Cyrus Tours’ clients. The company plans to similarly convert additional trains and buses in its fleet.
